$460 Great Veggie Co-op Seeks Positive Housemates (oakland lake merritt / grand) Reply to: hous-....@craigslist.org Date: 2007-12-12

Intentional Vegetarian Co-op

Available now: We're looking for a new housemate to live in our venerable and quirky Victorian home. The house features 15 rooms (!), stained-glass windows, high ceilings, wood floors, creaky old windows, a wild garden, and other distinctively Victorian flair. We'd like to find someone who is excited about being here and looking to be an engaged member of an intentional vegetarian co-op.

Non smokers / non(hard)-drug users only, please. And, unfortunately, we can't take on any new pets that don't live in a cage or an aquarium.

The Room

The first floor room has windows facing southeast to the sunrise and northeast over the roses in the front yard. It's wired for the Internet. Rent is $460.

Another room may be opening up shortly as well.

The house has a washer and dryer and storage in the basement. Rent does not include water, garbage or PG&E, which typically comes to $50/month (also including dish soap, detergent, TP, cleaning supplies, and other communal necessaries).

Our Household

Named for a lumber baron of the late 19th century, Hogan House has seven housemates--a mix of men and women--who range in age from 22ish to 40ish--and two dogs. As individuals we are: a middle-school math and science teacher, a high-school Spanish teacher, a journalist, a community organizer, a roller skating techie, and two dogs; we have a variety of interests, from guitar and tango to soccer and yoga. While each of us is busy with her own life, we include Hogan House as a part of that busy-ness, making concerted efforts to set aside time for house meals, house projects and housemates.

Toward this end, we have systems around food buying, preparing shared vegetarian meals and house keeping; these systems were created with an eye to cost effectiveness and sensitivity to the environment. We also pitch in on caring for the garden (and eating the fresh food it bears us!), and enjoy occasional house workdays and weekly community meetings to both take care of business and be social and supportive.

*We're a co-op in the sense that we share food and other community systems. However just one person owns the house, and she lives here as well. Additionally, we're not strict vegetarians, but our shared food is.*

The Process

We understand that this is a long posting, but we're intent on finding a good match. If you're interested please:

(1) visit www.hoganhouse.org for a virtual tour with photos; (2) check out our community guidelines, also at www.hoganhouse.org; (3) e-mail us and tell us a little bit about you and how you imagine yourself as a part of our community. Please include a phone number and let us know you've read the guidelines. (4) we have a three-step interview process: a house tour, an interview, and a social meeting. Altogether it takes at least two weeks. We try to work with applicants' schedules, but we're more interested in finding the right fit than filling the room the day it opens. Patience is a virtue!

We're looking forward to meeting you!
