== Mission Statement == The mission of our co-op is to provide a safe and nurturing home that promotes mutual respect and compassion, balanced, equitable and sustainable practices, and creative and fun community activity.
We strive to implement these values within ourselves, our home, and our broader community. We will work towards this through community potlucks and other social gatherings, arts and crafts, sharing music, facilitated consensus-based house meetings, gardening, shared cooking, learning to be self-sufficient, open and honest communication, and creating social change.
Description
We are a small co-op in South Berkeley of 8 people who are involved in social justice, environmental, musical and other pursuits. The house originally started with some public health and medical students, but over time has grown to include folks working in music making, free speech radio, sexual health, teaching/education, nonprofit publishing, gardening, and other related areas. We are currently 3 grad students and 5 professionals, with 2 couples sharing one room each. We are all in our mid-twenties to early thirties. All of us are passionate, considerate, warm, and even occasionally funny!
We invite our friends, strangers, as well as strange friends to join us for bi-weekly potlucks, evening discussions around health and social justice related themes, film nights, as well as occasional music and dancing. We have created a space encourages diversity and environmental sustainability. With the new roommate's help, we hope to continue to advocate for yummy things in our home and in the world. We invite you to share your perspective on what intentional community can mean, and how to realize this vision.
Ours is a 100 year old house that has it quirks; in other words, a loved and appreciated home with 'character'.
Amenities:
-large backyard -large, organic gardens surrounding the house -bike/laundry room -plenty of storage space -3 bathrooms/ 6 bedrooms -communal, multipurpose room (aside from living/dining room) -comfy, inviting front porch -driveway & plenty of free street parking -friendly neighbors -quiet street (we live right beside a speed bump, and our block is flanked by 2 bike boulevards)
Potlucks
We are committed to creating community and dialogue around health, environmental, and social issues. Over the past two years, we’ve hosted biweekly potlucks and other events to facilitate this process. During summer 2009, we’re not organizing potlucks due to travel and house turnover (see opportunity below). When we resume our potlucks in fall 2009, we hope you will join us and come learn and celebrate with us.
Potluck Details: House potlucks have historically been on the first and third (and fifth) Sundays of each month, roughly around 7-9:30pm. In Fall 2009, this schedule may change so please stay tuned! If you do come to a potluck, we ask you bring something to share (e.g. food, drink or dessert), feel free to bring friend(s) and/or notices of upcoming events, but most importantly bring yourself! Please check back on this website in September for updated schedules!
We live at 1614 Tyler Street, in South Berkeley. Tyler is one block south of Ashby Ave, between King and California Streets. We’re three blocks west of the Ashby BART and very close to Malcolm X school. There is bike parking at the back of the house and usually plenty of car parking on our block.
House Mate Search
7 members of the Health and Social Justice Co-op (located 3 blocks from Ashby Bart) are seeking a roommate to 'co-op-erate' and inhabit one of the rooms. The room will become available as of June 1.
We are looking for a kind soul who finds their life's work involved with making the world a better place (this can include profession, volunteer work, hobbies etc.). Rent will be somewhere in the ballpark of $600-650, depending upon certain details. Common food (all meals included) and utilities are around $150-$225 per month in addition to rent.
If you are interested, please read the description below and then respond -please elaborate- to hsj.house@gmail.com with answers to this compatibility quiz: (FYI, only people who respond with answers will be considered. We're sticklers, we know.)
1) Why are you interested in living with us? 2) What does "intentional community" mean to you? 3) What are you up to in life right now? 4) What do you like to do for fun? 5) When are you able to move in? 6) Anything else we should know about you? 7) What are your contact details?
