About us

  • We are a community of nine people living in a mixed-use building on the edge of Fruitvale, and we're looking for a new housemate/project member to join our coop-style living situation and collaborate on the food justice project we run out of our storefront downstairs. We're diverse in our cultural and ethnic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and personalities, and welcoming of all applicants, though we strive to have a good balance of queer folks, and people of color--if you're excited about food justice and getting your hands dirty in the garden, all the better! Current housemates are mostly women of color in their mid-20s and early 30s, and are involved in social, environmental, and food justice, and bike-related activism, SOL (Sustaining Ourselves Locally)
  • and day laborer outreach. We do our best to create a culture of mutual respect, of easygoing community and comfortable communication, and a safer space for people of diverse contexts--but we hope new housemates will also be awesome friends, brilliant collaborators, and partners-in-hijinx. We're open to cats and chill dogs that won't dig in the garden., SOL (Sustaining Ourselves Locally)
  • art and community arts/mural projects, SOL (Sustaining Ourselves Locally)
  • education (from elementary to special ed to university-level, and as students themselves), SOL (Sustaining Ourselves Locally)
  • gardening and landscaping, SOL (Sustaining Ourselves Locally)

Because we are both a home and a project, a room in this space asks a greater commitment of time and effort than many other households, but comes with the returns of being part of an incredible space to live, a beautiful organic garden, the chance to create projects galore, and an urban community involved in, inspired by, and learning about environmentally and socially-conscious living. (That said, we're laid-back about house and project responsibilities, and prioritize flexibility over being a stickler for rules--and we don't write passive-aggressive notes!)

Our 11-room craftsman-style cooperative house has a Ground floor middle room available. This large 11'4 x 13'9 room on the main floor has curved 9' ceilings, a pair of east facing windows, plus a small south facing window. The room is pre-wired for a phone and shared DSL. It has a closet with shelves and a cloths rod, good sound insulation, and a complete shared bathroom. We are a stable household of 5 adults with one room becoming available. We are one very happy 5 2/3 year old girl, (3 women, 2 men, ages 32, 34, 48, 54, 66). Reasonably quiet house and a VERY pedestrian/bicycle friendly neighborhood. Reasonably quiet house and a VERY pedestrian/bicycle friendly neighborhood. Inside, our home offers a generous amount of common space throughout, a WAY organized kitchen, a comfy living room & spacious dining room, all with lots of sun. Our raised garden beds flourished with vegetables, berries and fruit trees. In the winter, we often light a fire in the wood-burning stove and keep our utility bill lower with our solar electric panels, solar water heater, and hydronic heater systems. We connect by eating two dinners per week together at about 7PM on Mon & Weds & share household chores including weekly grocery shopping, buying primarily organic food (including some fish & chicken). We make decisions at house meetings after diner every few weeks and have a monthly 3 hour work party. Please desire to live in a cooperative but independent community, be willing to share main food staples and participate in a cooking rotation. Please enjoy being around children. Ideally, you are socially & emotionally sensitive w/ GREAT communication skills, progressive & politically active, ecologically centered, arts & activist oriented.

The home

  • The room for rent is actually two rooms- a tiny bedroom (~7'x8') with lots of natural light and an east-facing window, and a large adjoining living space (~10'x12') that's semi-public but all yours, with hardwood floors and built-in storage space, in an apartment with two other housemates (we rent three adjoining apartments above our storefront space). Rent is $460 per month (utilities, wi-fi, and netflix average an additional $30/month per person), and move-in deposit (fully refundable) is $525. Our kitchen and common spaces are in the storefront downstairs--where there's also a small library, a cluttery office, a guest loft, washer & dryer, and damp basement storage. Housemates share house bulk food--grains, produce, eggs, and staple items like oil, spices--for an extra $125/month. As a house, our food purchasing and house dinners are mostly vegan, and we make an effort to prioritize supporting local/regional farmers of color, SOL (Sustaining Ourselves Locally)
  • individually, housemates are welcome to purchase and prepare whatever they'd like (we're not dogmatic!) using all-house ingredients, or their own., SOL (Sustaining Ourselves Locally)

The project

  • The focal point of our project is lush quarter-acre garden in our backyard with vegetable beds, a large chicken coop, four beehives, huge compost bins, a greenhouse that lets cold in at the edges, a little pond (and resident frog!), herb beds, and so many fruit trees! (Plum, peach, two kiwi vines and a passionfruit, lemon and orange trees, grape vines, a spindly avocado, cherries, loquats, a fijoa, and a banana that won't fruit in this climate.) Our gardens, transformed over the past five years from an overgrown, detritus-filled urban lot, are actively used in our educational programs and community workshops on sustainable living practices (e.g. food justice, nutrition, composting, graywater treatment). As a project, we're constantly in slow-flux as incoming housemates bring their own vision to the project and outgoing folks' projects are adapted to fit the goals of the current housemates. We're currently in the middle of a summer internship program aimed at local high school youth interested in gardening and social justice, though we also give educational garden tours to community and school groups, and provide meeting/kitchen space for community groups that use our storefront during the day, several days per week. (In the recent past we've also held fundraiser dance parties, movie nights, kraut and fermentation workshops.), SOL (Sustaining Ourselves Locally)
